Natural Wool Pot toppers

Yulgro Natural Wool-Based Pot Toppers

Natural wool-based Pot Toppers designed for professional nursery growers.

Suppress weeds, help retain moisture and reduce repeated hand-weeding with a practical, close-fitting surface cover for container-grown plants.

Made from a carefully developed blend of natural fibres and wool, with installation slits for easy fitting around even the more complex plant stems.

  • Reduce Weeds & Liverwort

Wool-based Pot Toppers suppress weeds and liverwort, reducing competition and helping growers maintain cleaner, more manageable container crops.

  • Save Labour & Time

Reduce repeated hand-weeding and the time spent cleaning up pots before sale or dispatch. Less routine weed removal means more labour available for productive nursery work.

  • Help Retain Moisture

The wool-based surface covering helps retain moisture in the growing medium while allowing irrigation water and nutrients to penetrate.

  • Reduce Reliance on Herbicides

Provides a physical barrier to weed establishment, helping growers reduce reliance on chemical weed-control treatments.

The Natural Benefits of Wool

Wool offers natural properties that can provide additional benefits in container growing.

  • Natural Insulation: Wool helps insulate the growing medium, moderating temperature fluctuations around plant roots
  • Slug Deterrence: Wool's fibrous texture may help discourage slugs from moving across the pot surface.
  • Natural Breakdown: As wool biodegrades, it gradually releases nutrients into the growing medium.
  • Moisture Retention: Wool helps reduce surface evaporation, supporting moisture retention between watering cycles.

  • Difference between 2 pots , a pot after a pot topper was removed and a pot that did not have a pot topper

After Pot Topper Removal – 2013

After the Pot Topper was removed from the left-hand container, the growing medium showed no visible weed or liverwort growth, in clear contrast to the uncovered container on the right.

 Trusted by Professional Growers

“We have been using Yulgro Pot Toppers since 2012 and have seen a significant reduction in the costs associated with spraying and weeding. Our plants are also much healthier.”

This Yulgro Pot Topper has remained in place for over three years, with the growing medium still covered and little visible weed growth around the plant.

Compare Your Weed-Control Options

Effective weed control is about more than the initial material price. Compare the labour, application and growing benefits of three approaches used in container nurseries.

Consideration Hand Weeding Bark Mulch Yulgro Pot Toppers
Weed suppression Removes weeds after emergence. Further weeding is required when new weeds establish. Published research supports weed suppression when suitable mulch is applied at an effective depth. CAFRE trials recorded just 0.42% weed-seed germination on the wool covering, compared with 49.58% without mulch, under the tested conditions.
Liverwort control Established liverwort requires manual removal and may need repeated attention. Published research shows that pine bark mulch can help suppress liverwort establishment when applied at suitable depths. In CAFRE's 2013 evaluation, wool mulch prevented further liverwort growth over three months, while existing liverwort died back beneath the covering.
Ongoing labour Repeated manual weeding throughout the crop cycle. Initial application labour plus any subsequent weed removal or mulch maintenance. A fitted surface covering designed to reduce the need for repeated hand-weeding.
Moisture management No surface mulch layer to reduce evaporation. Mulching can reduce evaporation from the growing-medium surface. CAFRE observed encouraging moisture-retention results with wool coverings. Additional published research supports wool mulch's water-retention potential.
Fit around the plant No surface covering fitted. Loose mulch is distributed around the plant stem. Purpose-designed installation slits and soft, flexible wool allow the topper to fit closely around the stem, helping minimise exposed growing media when correctly installed.
Growing-media space No additional covering material occupying container volume. A deeper mulch layer occupies part of the available container volume. Preformed surface covering without the need for a deep layer of loose mulch.
Application No initial covering operation, but weeds must be removed as needed. Bark must be distributed over the growing-medium surface. Can be fitted during potting or installed onto an existing crop.
Material handling No additional covering material. Loose mulch can shift or spill during pot handling. A fitted wool disc rather than a loose surface mulch layer.
Long-term coverage No continuing physical surface barrier. Coverage depends on mulch condition, depth and maintenance. Designed to remain in place. Real nursery observations include a Yulgro Pot Topper remaining in position for 3+ years without replacement or adjustment.
Preparation for dispatch Established weeds may require removal before sale or dispatch. Weed removal or displaced mulch may require attention before dispatch. Reduced weed establishment can mean less hand-weeding before dispatch.
Total cost Repeated labour costs depend on weed pressure, handling time and wages. Material purchase, application and any follow-up maintenance. Topper purchase and fitting, balanced against potential savings in repeated hand-weeding labour.

Independent Research Behind Yulgro

CAFRE — College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise

Our wool-based Pot Toppers were evaluated by CAFRE before the introduction of the Yulgro brand. The research investigated mulch materials for weed suppression, liverwort control and water management in container-grown nursery stock.

The wool Pot Toppers used in this research were supplied by our business and subsequently marketed under the Yulgro brand.

The published paper provides independent evidence relating to wool-based surface coverings in commercial horticulture.

Research findings relate to the specific materials and conditions tested. Yulgro's installation features are product-design characteristics.
